The Thai Fine Arts Department has created a national museum in the town of Ubon Ratchathani, Northeastern Thailand. The collection of the museum contains objects, mostly of local origin.
The museum contains six rooms. The first room is the Geography-Geology room of Ubon Ratchathani Province which shows the maps, mineral resources and gems of the province. The second room is the prehistoric room, displaying implements and pottery found in Ubon province. The third room "Dvaravati room", displaying objects pertaining to the Dvaravati period or those from contemporary epochs. The fourth room "Khmer room", displaying Khmer objects. The fifth room contains Buddha images created by Ubon Ratchathani craftsman. The sixth room displays local tradition and objects.
Though this museum is rather small, it is worthwhile visiting because of the many interesting objects displayed in an orderly manner.

กรมหมื่นนครสวรรค์ศักดิพินิต โปรดให้รื้อตำหนักไทยของพระบิดา คือ สมเด็จเจ้าฟ้าฯ กรมพระนครสวรรค์วรพินิต มาปลูกไว้ที่วังสวนผักกาด และทรงเริ่มตกแต่งตำหนักเหล่านั้นด้วยโบราณวัตถุไทยที่พระธิดาได้ทรงรวบรวมไว้แต่ก่อน ต่อมา เสด็จในกรมฯ ได้ประทานวังสวนผักกาดให้เป็นพิพิธภัณฑ์และตั้งชื่อให้ว่า พิพิธภัณฑ์จุมภฏ-พันธุ์ทิพย์ ปัจจุบันพิพิธภัณฑ์แห่งนี้ประกอบด้วยตำหนักไทยหลังแรกทางด้านทิศเหนือมีพระพุทธรูปสำคัญ คือ พระพุทธรูป
คันธารราฐ เทวรูปพระอุมา รูปอรรธนารีศวร (ในบทความใช้ว่ารูปอรรธนารี) ภาพสลักบนไม้ จิตรกรรมบนไม้เรื่องพุทธประวัติสมัยอยุธยา ฯลฯ ตำหนักไทยด้านทิศใต้มีพระพุทธรูปปางลีลาสมัยสุโขทัย เครื่องมุก เครื่องถม พัดรอง ฯลฯ หอเขียนมีภาพลายรดน้ำตั้งอยู่ทางทิศใต้ของบริเวณวัง เรือนไทยทางทิศตะวันตกมีภาพเขียนสมัยปัจจุบันของศิลปินไทย เรือนไทยทางทิศตะวันตกเฉียงเหนือมีเครื่องสังคโลกสมัยสุโขทัย เครื่องถ้วยชามสมัยลพบุรีและสมัยก่อนประวัติศาสตร์.

ทับหลังนารายณ์บรรทมสินธุ์เดิมอยู่ทางทิศตะวันออกของประสาทพนมรุ้ง จังหวัดบุรีรัมย์ แต่ตกลงมาที่พื้นและแตกออกเป็นสองซีก หลักฐานรูปแรกสุดได้ถ่ายไว้สมัยสมเด็จกรมพระยาดำรงราชานุภาพ เมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2472 อีก 31 ปีต่อมา นายมานิต วัลลิโภดม จากกรมศิลปากรถ่ายรูปไว้เมื่อ พ.ศ. 2503 ต่อมา กรมศิลปากรจึงได้พิมพ์เป็นหนังสือ หลังจากนั้นทับหลังก็หายไป ซึ่งกรมศิลปากรไปติดตามได้คืนมาชิ้นหนึ่ง ปัจจุบันติดอยู่ที่ปราสาทพนมรุ้งแล้ว เมื่อ ศาสตราจารย์ หม่อมเจ้า สุภัทรดิศ ดิศกุล ได้รับเชิญไปบรรยายที่สหรัฐอเมริกา รวมทั้งที่สถาบันชิคาโกด้วยได้พบทับหลังตั้งแสดงอยู่ที่นั่น จึงได้รายงานถึงกรมศิลปากรให้ดำเนินการติดต่อขอคืนในปี พ.ศ. 2519 และเงียบหายไปเป็นเวลากว่า 10 ปี จนกระทั่ง พ.ศ. 2531 จึงมีการติดต่อ และส่งคืนให้ในที่สุด.

การประชุมสภาผู้มีความรู้ทางด้านตะวันออกระหว่างชาติ ครั้งที่ 27 จัดขึ้น ณ มหาวิทยาลัยมิชิแกน เมืองแอนอาร์เบอร์ สหรัฐอเมริกา แบ่งการประชุมเป็น 2 แผนกคือ แผนกตะวันออกใกล้และอิสลาม เอเซียภาคใต้ เอเซียอาคเนย์ เอเซียภาคกลาง และทิวเขาอัลไต ผู้เขียนได้แสดงปาฐกถาภาษาอังกฤษในแผนกเอเซียอาคเนย์สมัยโบราณเรื่อง “วิวัฒนาการของเทวรูปสัมฤทธิ์สมัยสุโขทัย และการตรวจตราผลที่ได้” ซึ่งเคยแต่งไว้เป็นหนังสือภาษาไทยชื่อ “เทวรูปสัมฤทธิ์สมัยสุโขทัย” แต่ครั้งนี้ได้เพิ่มเติมผลการตรวจตราผลที่ได้จากใช้ประติมากรรมที่มีอายุจารึกบอกไว้บนฐานประกอบด้วย นอกจากนั้น ยังมีนักวิชาการแสดงปาฐกถาเรื่องอื่นๆ ที่เกี่ยวข้องกับประเทศไทยอีกหลายท่าน คือ นายไวอัต (Wyatt) แห่งมหาวิทยาลัยลอนดอน แสดงปาฐกถาเรื่อง “สาบาน 3 ครั้ง ในสมัยสุโขทัย” นายเวลลา แห่งมหาวิทยาลัยฮาวาย แสดงปาฐกถาเรื่อง “พระบาทสมเด็จพระมงกุฎเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว ผู้เป็นทั้งกษัตริย์ตามประเพณีและนักชาตินิยมปัจจุบัน” นายคันนิงแฮม แห่งมหาวิทยาลัยเยล สหรัฐอเมริกา แสดงปาฐกถาเรื่อง “แพทย์ตามประเพณีไทย” และเจ้าวรวงค์เธอกรมหมื่นพิทยลาภพฤฒิยากร ทรงบรรยายเรื่อง “รามสูร-เมขลา” นายสิงครเวล แห่งมหาวิทยาลัยมลายู บรรยายเรื่อง “การศึกษาเปรียบเทียบระหว่างมหากาพย์รามายณะฉบับของไทย มลายู และทมิฬ” นายกุศล วโรภาส แห่งมหาวิทยาลัยแห่งรัฐอิลลินอยส์ บรรยายเรื่อง “ศักดินาหรือแบบแผนยศของไทยแต่โบราณ” น.ส.สุทธิลักษณ์ อำพันวงศ์ แสดงบทความเรื่อง “แหล่งของห้องสมุดในประเทศไทย” และ ดร.อุดม วโรตมสิกขดิตถ์ แสดงเรื่อง “การเน้นและกฎของเสียงในภาษาไทย”.
